Midsummer Song: Shine Down

Midsummer is upon us, and that means that the crops are planted and growing and the sun is high. The sun is one of the most obvious targets of human worship since time immemorial, which makes sense since he/she/it gives us so much of what is necessary for our lives and the lives of almost all living creatures, and Midsummer is an obvious time to give the sun its proper honor, so this is an attempt to do just that.

Musically, this achieves some sense of the unusual by using the A mixolydian mode. This is a lot like A major, but instead of a G# it uses a G natural. This also shifts the dominent harmony from E major to E minor, which softens the ends of each phrase and creates that really odd Bm-Em-A progression used several times in this. The choice of a 3/4 time with an emphasis on the first beat is taken from some Scandanavian dance forms that use this kind of feel, although it's not strictly followed by any means.

All works are copyright by yours truly, but may be distributed under Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial Share-Alike 4.0. That means, in short, you can use them yourself and your grove, and play the song to your heart's content both in private and in public, but must give credit where credit is due, and if you're planning on selling something involving this song we need to talk about that first.
