Samhain Song: You Are Remembered

The late fall season is upon us. The last bit of crops have been brought in, I've been busily winterizing my house in preparation for the deep cold of winter, and there is a sense of the world dying as it turns towards darkness. As is typical for modern pagan types, this leads to a focus in this season on our beloved dead. This is particularly meaningful to me this year, as I have lost a number of people close to me, including a relative.

Musically, the rather eerie melodie is the result of switching into the Phrygian mode. It's a little like a minor key, but uses a flat 2nd note of the scale. So in this case, the next note up from D is an Eb rather than the more usual E. This also creates a bunch of tritones between the Eb and A which would otherwise not be there, and add to the feeling that things aren't normal. Which they shouldn't be: The loss of friends and loved ones and heroes should never be seen as normal, even if that loss is a part of being alive.

And to add to the abnormality, I decided to introduce me playing some very simple stuff on a very obscure instrument known as the "guitar". (Yes, I have and sort of play one of those now too.)

That means, in short, you can use them yourself and your grove, and play the song to your heart's content both in private and in public, but must give credit where credit is due, and if you're planning on selling something involving this song we need to talk about that first.
