This particular song is in the rhythm of a hambo, which is a Scandanavian folk dance that looks like this:

This was done to match the musical form and style with the culture from which the beings mentioned in the song were first named. In addition, the poetic style of the lyrics comes from the alliterative verse described most thoroughly in the Prose Edda.
